Zwitterionic detergents are both positively and negatively charged. These mild detergents efficiently solubilize membrane proteins without affecting the native state or activity of the proteins. They are more efficient at preventing non-specific protein aggregation than ionic detergents and are easily removed from solutions by dialysis. Zwitterionic detergents are frequently used in electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing, as well as ion-exchange chromatography.
